Factors That Affect the Health of Your Gums

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a dental problem that affects more than half of American adults. If you want to keep your teeth and gums healthy, it’s important to be aware of different factors that can affect the health of your gums. Dr. Peter Jost has been helping the residents of Eastpointe, MI, with all their dental needs since 1983. Contact him today for an appointment or consultation.

You and Your Gum Health

To reduce your risk of gum disease, there are three things you need to do regularly:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day
  • Floss daily
  • Visit your dentist a least every six months

If you practice this healthy dental hygiene routine, you will minimize your risk of gum disease. When left untreated, gum disease leads to tooth loss and a higher risk of heart disease.

The Stages of Periodontal Disease

If you are experiencing the early signs of gum disease and you get it treated as soon as possible, chances are your Eastpointe, MI, dentist will eliminate it. That's why it's so important to be aware of the stages of gum disease, especially the early ones.

Stage one – gingivitis: Gingivitis is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth and around the gum line. Over time, the bacteria in the plaque damage the teeth and gums, causing the tissue to become inflamed and sensitive. If left untreated, it leads to more serious conditions.

Stage two - periodontitis: This is a much more threatening form of gum disease. As it progresses, it leads to an infection that destroys the bone that holds your teeth in place. The result is tooth loss and bad breath.
